Charging of Insulators

Since charge cannot flow through insulators, neither conduction nor induction can be used to charge, insulators, so in order to charge an insulator friction is used. Whenever an insulator is rubbed against a body exchange of electrons takes place between the two. This results in appearance of equal and opposite charges on the insulator and the other body. Thus the insulator is charged.

For example rubbing of plastic with fur, silk with glass causes charging of these things.

Once the electrons are on the metal sphere, where they can move readily, they repel one another and…

  • Charging by Rubbing

Last modified on:4 years agoReading Time:3Minutes Charging by Rubbing The simplest way to charge certain bodies is to rub them against each other. When a glass rod is rubbed with a silk cloth, the glass rod acquires some positive charge and the silk cloth acquires negative charge by the same amount. The explanation of appearance of…

Last modified on:3 years agoReading Time:7MinutesElectric Field An electric field is a vector field that describes the force exerted by a charged object on other charged objects in its vicinity. It is a fundamental concept in electromagnetism and is essential for understanding the behavior of electrically charged particles and systems. The electric field at a given…

  • Numerical Problems Based on Superposition Principle of Electric Forces for Class 12 Physics

Last modified on:3 years agoReading Time:6MinutesPrinciple of superposition of electrostatic forces. Coulomb’s law gives force between two point charges. The principle of superposition enables us to find the force on a point charge due to a group of point charges. This principle is based on the property that the forces with which two charges attract or…
