Charging of Insulators

Since charge cannot flow through insulators, neither conduction nor induction can be used to charge, insulators, so in order to charge an insulator friction is used. Whenever an insulator is rubbed against a body exchange of electrons takes place between the two. This results in appearance of equal and opposite charges on the insulator and the other body. Thus the insulator is charged.
For example rubbing of plastic with fur, silk with glass causes charging of these things.

Electric Field of a Line Charge
Last modified on:3 years agoReading Time:3MinutesElectric Field of a Line Charge Positive charge q is distributed uniformly along a line with length 2a, lying along the y-axis between y=–a and y=+a. We are here interested in finding the electric field at point P on the x-axis. Derivation of electric field due to a line charge: Thus,…

Electric Field Lines
Last modified on:3 years agoReading Time:5MinutesElectric Field Lines Electric charges create an electric field in the space surrounding them. It is useful to have a kind of “map” that gives the direction and indicates the strength of the field at various places. Field lines, a concept introduced by Michael Faraday, provide us with an easy way…

Human Ear
Last modified on:5 years agoReading Time:3MinutesHuman Ear The human ear, like that of other mammals, contains sense organs that serve two quite different functions: that of hearing and that of head and eye movements. Anatomically, the ear has three distinguishable parts: the outer, middle, and inner ear. How Human Ear Works? Different sounds produced in our surroundings are collected by…

Numerical Problems Based on Superposition Principle of Electric Forces for Class 12 Physics
Last modified on:6 months agoReading Time:28MinutesPrinciple of superposition of electrostatic forces. Coulomb’s law gives force between two point charges. The principle of superposition enables us to find the force on a point charge due to a group of point charges. This principle is based on the property that the forces with which two charges attract or…

Numerical Problems Based on Coulomb’s Law for Class 12 Physics
Last modified on:5 months agoReading Time:26MinutesCoulomb’s Law Coulomb’s law, named after French physicist Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, describes the electrostatic interaction between two electrically charged particles. The law states that the magnitude of the electrostatic force between two point charges is directly proportional to the product of the charges and inversely proportional to the square of the…

Frictional Electricity
Last modified on:3 years agoReading Time:10Minutes What is frictional electricity? Frictional electricity, also known as static electricity, is the type of electricity that results from the friction or rubbing of two objects together. When two objects are rubbed against each other, the friction between them can cause the transfer of electrons from one object to the…
