FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
(1) What do you mean by a vector?
Physical quantities having both magnitude and direction are known as vectors.
(2) Give some examples of vectors.
Displacement, velocity, acceleration, force etc.
(3) “All the physical quantities having magnitude and direction can be vectors”. Comment.
No, In addition of these two characteristics, quantities must follow the laws of vector addition and satisfy the commutative property of vector addition so that it can be classified as a vector. e.g. angular displacement of a body
(4) Can the scalar product of the vectors be zero even when neither of them is a zero vector?
Yes, if the angle between the vectors is 90°.
(5) Can two vectors of different magnitudes be combined to give zero resultant?
No, two vectors of different magnitudes cannot be combined to give zero resultant.
(6) Is pressure a vector? Give reason.
No, pressure is always taken to be normal to the plane of the area on which it is acting. As this direction is unique, it does not need any specification. So pressure is not a vector.
