What is Relative Motion?

Persons standing at the platform appears to be moving in backward direction, if you look outside the window of a moving train. How does stationary object and standing persons appears to be moving. To understand this, you have to understand the important concept of relative motion.

Rest and motion are relative terms. An object at rest w.r.t. some object may be in motion w.r.t. some other objects.

Let us understand this with an example.

If you are travelling in a train with speed 50 km/hr, then your speed w.r.t. another passenger sitting on the train is zero. If you ask them, they will say you are not moving. But for passengers standing on the platform, you are moving with 50 km/hr as you are on the train and the train is moving with 50 km/hr. So your state of rest or motion depends on the location of the observer. This type of motion is called relative motion.
