Case Study: Lenses and Their Applications
Read the passage carefully, then answer all three questionsLenses are transparent and light can pass through them. Lenses are classified as convex lens and concave lens and we can distinguish between these two types of lenses by just touching them. Lenses are widely used in various appliances that we come across in our daily life.
A convex lens is defined by its physical shape: it bulges outwards, meaning it is thicker in the middle and thinner at the edges. A concave lens, on the other hand, is thinner in the middle and thicker at the edges.
A concave lens is a diverging lens. Regardless of where the object is placed in front of it, it always forms an image that is virtual, erect, and diminished (smaller than the object).
A magnifying glass uses a convex lens. When an object is placed very close to a convex lens (between its optical center and principal focus), it forms a magnified, erect, and virtual image that can be seen through the lens.
