(C) $\mathrm{C}_6 \mathrm{H}_{12} \mathrm{O}_6+6 \mathrm{O}_2 \rightarrow 6 \mathrm{CO}_2+6 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}+$ Energy

Q5. What is the general name of chemicals that are added to fat and oil containing foods to prevent the development of rancidity?

Ans. The chemicals that are added to fat and oil containing food to prevent the development of rancidity are called antioxidants. These substances prevent the oxidation of fats and oils and thus, prevent bad odour from being formed in the food.

Q6. Complete the missing components/variables given as $X$ and $Y$ in the following:
(A) $\mathrm{Pb}\left(\mathrm{NO}_3\right)_{2(a q)}+2 \mathrm{KI}_{(a q)} \rightarrow \mathrm{PbI}_2(\mathrm{X})+2 \mathrm{KNO}_3(\mathrm{Y})$
(B) $\mathrm{Cu}_{(s)}+2 \mathrm{AgNO}_{3(a q)} \rightarrow \mathrm{Cu}\left(\mathrm{NO}_3\right)_{2(a q)}+\mathrm{X}_{(s)}$
(C) $\mathrm{Zn}_{(s)}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_{4(a q)} \rightarrow \mathrm{ZnSO}_4(\mathrm{X})+\mathrm{H}_2(\mathrm{Y})$
(D) $\mathrm{CaCO}_{3(\mathrm{~s})} \xrightarrow{\mathrm{X}} \mathrm{CaO}_{(\mathrm{s})}+\mathrm{CO}_{2(\mathrm{~g})}$

Ans. (A) $\mathrm{Pb}\left(\mathrm{NO}_3\right)_{2(a q)}+2 \mathrm{KI}_{(a q)} \rightarrow \mathrm{PbI}_{2(s)}+2 \mathrm{KNO}_{3(a q)}$
It is a precipitation reaction. When lead nitrate reacts with aqueous potassium iodide, it forms yellow precipitate of lead iodide $\left(\mathrm{Pbl}_2\right)$, while potassium nitrate $\left(\mathrm{KNO}_3\right)$ remains in the solution.
(B) $\mathrm{Cu}_{(s)}+2 \mathrm{AgNO}_{3(a q)} \rightarrow \mathrm{Cu}\left(\mathrm{NO}_3\right)_{2(a q)}+2 \mathrm{Ag}_{(s)}$
This is a displacement reaction. Since copper is more reactive than silver, it displaces silver from silver nitrate solution, resulting in the formation of solid silver and aqueous copper nitrate $\left(\mathrm{Cu}\left(\mathrm{NO}_3\right)_2\right)$.
(C) $\mathrm{Zn}_{(s)}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_{4(a q)} \rightarrow \mathrm{ZnSO}_{4(a q)}+\mathrm{H}_{2(g)}$
When zinc metal reacts with sulphuric acid, it displaces hydrogen gas from $\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{SO}_4$, producing hydrogen gas ( $\mathrm{H}_2$ ) and forming an aqueous zinc sulphate $\left(\mathrm{ZnSO}_4\right)$ solution.
(D) $\mathrm{CaCO}_{3(\mathrm{~s})} \xrightarrow{\text { Heat }} \mathrm{CaO}_{(\mathrm{s})}+\mathrm{CO}_{2(\mathrm{~g})}$
This is an example of thermal decomposition reaction. Calcium carbonate ( $\mathrm{CaCO}_3$ ) breaks down upon heating, producing calcium oxide (CaO), and releasing carbon dioxide gas.

Q7. Assertion (A): The colour of aqueous solution of copper sulphate turns colourless when a piece of lead is added to it.
Reason (R): Lead is more reactive than copper, and hence displaces copper from its salt solution.

(a) Both (A) and (R) are true, and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
(b) Both (A) and (R) are true, and (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
(c) (A) is true but (R) is false.
(d) (A) is false but (R) is true.

Ans. (a)

Q8. Assertion (A): The decomposition reaction of silver chloride into silver and chlorine is an exothermic process.
Reason (R): The reactions in which energy is absorbed are known as endothermic reactions.

(a) Both (A) and (R) are true, and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
(b) Both (A) and (R) are true, and (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).
(c) (A) is true but (R) is false.
(d) (A) is false but (R) is true.

Ans. (d)

Q9. Study the figure given below and answer the following questions:

(A) Name the process depicted in the diagram.
(B) Write the composition of gases collected at anode and cathode.
(C) Write the balanced chemical equation of the reaction taking place in this case.
(D) The reaction does not take place if a few drops of dilute sulphuric acid are not added to water. Why?

Ans. (A) Electrolytic decomposition of water/ electrolysis of water.
(B) The gas collected at cathode is hydrogen, which is double the volume of oxygen collected at anode.
(C)

$$
2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_{(l)} \xrightarrow[\text { current }]{\text { Electric }} 2 \mathrm{H}_{2(g)}+\mathrm{O}_{2(g)}
$$

(D) Pure water is a poor conductor of electricity due to the lack of free ions. Adding dilute sulphuric acid provides $\mathrm{H}^{+}$and $\mathrm{SO}_4{ }^{2-}$ ions, increasing water’s conductivity and allowing electrolysis to occur efficiently.

Q10. When firecrackers burn, they produce flames of various colours. This effect is achieved by mixing different metal powders during manufacturing. For instance, copper burns with a bright green colour, while magnesium burns with a bright white colour. A simple yet fascinating experiment involves burning magnesium, which can be conducted safely in a laboratory or even at home.

Based on the given information, answer the following questions.

(A) Identify the type of reaction that occurs when a strip of magnesium ribbon burns. Also, write a balanced chemical equation using appropriate symbols for the state of matter.

(B) When a strip of magnesium ribbon burns:
(i) What is the colour of the flame?
(ii) What is the colour of the ash formed?

(C) (i) How can you determine the nature of the ash formed?
(ii) Give an example of a combination reaction that occurs:
(1) between two elements.
(2) between two compounds.

(A) Burning of a strip of magnesium ribbon is a combination reaction. The balanced chemical equation for this reaction is:

$$
2 \mathrm{Mg}_{(s)}+\mathrm{O}_{2(g)} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{MgO}_{(s)}
$$

(B) (i) The flame produced is dazzling white.
(ii) The ash formed is white in colour.
(C) (i) The ash formed on burning a strip of magnesium ribbon is magnesium oxide.

$$
2 \mathrm{Mg}_{(s)}+\mathrm{O}_{2(g)} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{MgO}_{(s)}
$$

When dissolved in water, it forms magnesium hydroxide, which is basic in nature. This can be represented as:

$$
\mathrm{MgO}_{(s)}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_{(l)} \rightarrow \mathrm{Mg}(\mathrm{OH})_{2(a q)}
$$

To confirm its basicity, a litmus test is performed. Blue litmus remains unchanged, while red litmus turns blue, indicating a basic solution.
(ii) (1) Combination reaction between two elements:

$$
2 \mathrm{H}_{2(g)}+\mathrm{O}_{2(g)} \rightarrow 2 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_{(l)}
$$

(2) Combination reaction between two compounds:

$$
\mathrm{NH}_{3(g)}+\mathrm{HCl}_{(g)} \rightarrow \mathrm{NH}_4 \mathrm{Cl}_{(s)}
$$
