The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) publishes Chemistry textbooks for Class 12. Here we are providing the updated NCERT Books.

The use of NCERT Books Class 12 Chemistry is not only suitable for studying the regular syllabus of various boards but it can also be useful for the candidates appearing for various engineering and medical entrance examinations. NCERT books are must do books for all the students preparing for engineering and medical entrance exams and other competitive exams too.

Class 12 Chemistry – Chapterwise Analysis (2025-26 CBSE Rationalised Syllabus)

In earlier years, Class 12 Chemistry had 16 chapters, covering topics like Solid State, Solutions, Electrochemistry, Surface Chemistry, etc. But from 2021 onwards, CBSE rationalised the syllabus, removing overlaps and reducing the number of chapters.
Now (2025-26), only 10 chapters remain for board exam preparation. This makes the syllabus more focused, while still retaining all the core concepts needed for higher studies and competitive exams (JEE, NEET, etc.).

Chapter 1: Solutions

Covers concentration terms, solubility, colligative properties, and abnormal molar mass. Useful for numerical practice. Earlier syllabus included “Solid State” before this chapter, but it has been removed in the rationalised version.

Chapter 2: Electrochemistry

Explains electrochemical cells, galvanic cells, Nernst equation, conductance, and batteries. Practical applications like fuel cells are emphasized. Still a high-weightage chapter for both boards and JEE.

Chapter 3: Chemical Kinetics

Deals with rate of reaction, order and molecularity, integrated rate laws, and Arrhenius equation. A scoring chapter with mostly numerical questions.

Chapter 4: The d- and f-Block Elements

Focuses on transition metals, lanthanoids, and actinoids. Covers their properties, oxidation states, and industrial applications. Earlier “p-Block (Group 15, 16, 17, 18)” was also part of Class 12, but now excluded.

Chapter 5: Coordination Compounds

Important for structural and bonding concepts. Topics include Werner’s theory, VBT, CFT, nomenclature, and isomerism. Highly relevant for entrance exams.

Chapter 6: Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Introduction to alkyl and aryl halides, preparation, reactions, and mechanisms (SN1, SN2, E1, E2). A foundational organic chapter.

Chapter 7: Alcohols, Phenols and Ethers

Preparation, properties, and reactions of alcohols, phenols, and ethers. Covers acidic and electrophilic substitution reactions in phenols.

Chapter 8: Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Carbonyl compounds – their nomenclature, preparation, and reactions (nucleophilic addition, oxidation, reduction, etc.). Also covers carboxylic acid properties and acidity trends.

Chapter 9: Amines

Classification and structure of amines; preparation and reactions; diazonium salts and their importance. A very scoring organic chapter.

Chapter 10: Biomolecules

Introduces carbohydrates, proteins, enzymes, and nucleic acids. Focus is more on concept clarity than derivations. “Polymers” and “Chemistry in Everyday Life” were present earlier but are now removed.

Key Rationalisation Points

  • Reduced from 16 → 10 chapters for Class 12 Chemistry.
  • Chapters like Solid State, Surface Chemistry, p-Block Elements, Polymers, Chemistry in Everyday Life are no longer in board syllabus.
  • Current syllabus keeps only the core physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry essentials.
  • This reduction makes syllabus manageable for school exams while still aligned with JEE/NEET requirements.
