Whole Numbers
The numbers 1, 2, 3, …., are called natural numbers or counting numbers. Let us add one more number, i.e., zero (0), to the collection of natural numbers. Now the numbers are 0, 1, 2, 3,….. These numbers are called whole numbers.

Properties of Whole Numbers
Properties of whole numbers are important mathematical rules and characteristics that apply to all whole numbers. Here are some key properties of whole numbers for Class 6:
- Closure property: When you add or multiply two whole numbers, the result is always another whole number. For example, if you add 5 and 3 (5 + 3), the sum is 8, which is also a whole number.
- Commutative property: The order of addition and multiplication does not affect the result. For example, for any two whole numbers a and b, a + b = b + a and a × b = b × a.
- Associative property: The grouping of numbers does not affect the result of addition and multiplication. For example, for any three whole numbers a, b, and c, (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) and (a × b) × c = a × (b × c).
- Identity element: The whole number 0 serves as the identity element for addition. Adding 0 to any whole number leaves the number unchanged. For example, a + 0 = a for any whole number a.
- Multiplicative identity: The whole number 1 serves as the multiplicative identity. Multiplying any whole number by 1 leaves the number unchanged. For example, a × 1 = a for any whole number a.
- Distributive property: The distributive property relates addition and multiplication. For any three whole numbers a, b, and c, a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.
- Comparing whole numbers: Whole numbers can be compared using the symbols < (less than), > (greater than), and = (equal to). For example, 5 < 7, 10 > 6, and 4 = 4.
- Whole numbers on a number line: Whole numbers can be represented on a number line, with smaller numbers to the left and larger numbers to the right. The distance between consecutive whole numbers is the same.
- Whole number patterns: Whole numbers follow various patterns. For example, even numbers are divisible by 2 (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.), and odd numbers are not (1, 3, 5, 7, etc.).
- Prime numbers: Some whole numbers have only two factors, 1 and themselves, and are called prime numbers. For example, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, etc.
