Case Study Questions for Class 11 Chemistry Chapter 11 The p-Block Elements

Case Study Questions

Question 1:

p-block elements are the ones in which the last electron enters in a p-orbital of valence shell. The first members of each group of p-block differs from rest of the members of its corresponding group due to small size. B and C are the first members of group 13 and 14 respectively. Their properties differ from rest of the members of their group and sometimes a diagonal relationship is also seen. B compounds like halides are not hydrolysed by water unlike other group 13 members. Catenation is an exclusive property of C which it does not share with any other element of its group.

(i) The property which support anomalous behaviour of boron is
(a) formation of trihalides
(b) small size
(c) high electronegativity
(d) All of these

Show Answer Answer: d

(ii) Carbon has no tendency to form complex compounds due to
(a) its small size
(b) the availability of vacant d-orbitals
(c) non-availability of vacant d-orbitals
(d) no tendency to form covalent bonds

Show Answer Answer: c

(iii) Choose the correct statement about boron.
(a) Its melting and boiling points are higher than other members of the group
(b) Only boron exhibits allotropy while other members not
(c) It forms only ionic while other members can form covalent as well as ionic compounds
(d) All of the above

Show Answer Answer: d
